He was born in Izmir-Turkey in 1960. He graduated from Department of Horticulture in Faculty of Agriculture at Ege University in 1981. He worked in an agricultural enterprise on viticulture, as the farm manager between 1981 and 1990 and produced the first organic raisin grape in Turkey. He started working as a research assistant at the Horticulture Department of Ege University in 1990 and received a PhD degree after presenting a thesis entitled "Investigations on the effects of some cultural practices to the development, yield and quality of seedless grape variety” in 1995. He participated in a series of courses mainly on farm management, organic agriculture and viticulture in U.S.A., France, Egypt and Italy. During that period, he played an important role in the establishment of movements on Organic Agriculture in Turkey. He is the founder member of the Association of Ecological Agriculture of Turkey (ET0), and acted as the president of ETO between 2003 and 2007. He edited books and book chapters in addition to many articles presented in different congresses, symposia and workshops on viticulture, sustainable and organic agriculture as invited speaker. He is working as a full professor in the Viticulture Subdivision of the same department in 2006. His main research fields are, "Grape Growing and Breeding, Organic Viticulture, and Integrated Crop Production and Canopy Management”. He is a member of the International Society of Organic Farming Research (ISOFAR). He is the Vice President of the Sub Commission on Table and Raisin Grape and Non-Fermented Grape Products in the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV) since 2007. He is one of the founders and member of Turkish Society for Horticulture Sciences.
