Hallname: 3B-63

Carob is a native tree of the Mediterranean basin used in afforestation, in urban and rural landscaping and in dry farming for fruit production. The trees are resilient to dry climates and adapted to a wide range of soil types. Carob pods are used for food and fodder. The seed endosperms are used for locust bean gum (E410) production that is used in various industries. The seed embryo (germ flour) contains a good balance in essential amino acids, which makes it an interesting additive for the food industry. The symposium is organized under the umbrella of IHC 2018 for the first time (over 20 years after the last carob meeting). We intend to bring together researchers, farmers and people from the industry to share new knowledge and information on carob. We expect to create interdisciplinary discussions and communication between scientists, farmers and people from the industry. The Symposium will be of interest to members of different ISHS Sections and Commissions as Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, Nuts and Mediterranean Climate Fruits, Fruits and Vegetables and Health, Plant Genetic Resources and Landscape and Urban Horticulture.

Main Themes:

The symposium is planned to focus on a wide range of aspects including:

  • Biology
  • Crop improvement and cultivars for specific or multi-use
  • Agronomy and management
  • Composition and Processing and industrial uses.
