Prof. Dr. Bhimu Patil

Dr. Bhimu Patil is a Professor and the Director of the Vegetable and Fruit Improvement Center at Texas A&M University AgriLife. He has devoted his career to understand the role of the health-promoting factors by promoting the consumption of fresh, healthful, and delicious varieties of fruits and vegetables. His broad, multi-disciplinary research spans all aspects of fruit and vegetable production, from isolation and characterizations of the health-promoting compounds to plant breeding aimed to develop improved varieties, and post-harvest handling practices that will prevent soil-borne contamination of vegetables.

Dr. Patil's research has been recognized with many honors and has produced a remarkable publication and funding record. He is currently Section Chair for Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, in the International Society for Horticultural Sciences and has served as an International Advisory Board Member for nine professional societies. He has published 185 peer-reviewed journal articles and has given more than 120 invited presentations at land grant institutions, professional societies, commodity groups and other organizations.  Dr. Patil has received 18 awards, including Healthy Living Lifetime Achievement Award by the Texas International Producers Association, Distinguished Service Award from the American Chemical Society- Division of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, Outstanding Graduate Educator Award from the American Society for Horticultural Sciences, and Outstanding Achievement Research Award from the TAMU College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. Four professional societies (American Chemical Society, American Society for Horticultural Sciences, Brazilian Horticulture Society, TAMU AgriLife) recognized Patil as a Fellow, a title bestowed on those who have made exceptional contributions to research and academia.

Dr. Patil's mission also has encompassed education and outreach to colleagues, students, producers, and the general public. He co-founded an International Symposium on Human Health Effects of Fruits and Vegetables (FAVHealth) and this global-level biennial conference continue to draw premier researchers from almost 40 countries to share their latest findings on enhancing the healthy aspects of fruit and vegetables. He also served as chair of the Division of Agriculture and Food Chemistry of the American Chemical Society and this division celebrated its centennial anniversary during his leadership. He has chaired or co-chaired 25 national and international symposia. Moreover, with USDA support, he developed three multi-disciplinary and multi-state first-of-their-kind courses, "Science of Foods for Health" and "Phytochemicals in Fruits and Vegetables to Improve Human Health"; and "The Nexus of Food & Nutritional Security, Hunger and Sustainability".

The research and educational outreach programs led by Dr. Patil at the Vegetable and Fruit Improvement Center have received substantial attention and Dr. Patil has been interviewed and/or his work has been published in 135 articles from various news media including the Associated Press, Reuters, the Wall Street Journal, and Fox Health Channel. He has been an invited speaker, including keynote and plenary speaker, for his scientific research and educational excellence by several countries including China, Australia, Thailand, New Zealand, South Africa, South Korea, Brazil, Spain, Sweden, Israel, France, India, Canada, Portugal, and different states in the USA.

Dr. Patilís passion for promoting fruits and vegetables as "Foods for Health" and his stakeholder-driven mission to improve agriculture for growers, processors, retailers, and consumers has helped to improve agriculture economy and human health in Texas and around the globe.
